For many years, Martin Leman has been best known for his exquisite paintings of cats. One of Britain’s most popular artists, he also has an avid following abroad, especially in America and Japan. His 26 illustrated books have sold well over half a million copies. Martin Leman has been described as ‘the most sophisticated of “naïve” artists’, but unlike many so-called naïve or primitive painters, he has a thorough artistic training. He was a successful, widely experienced graphic designer, typographer, art director and teacher before becoming a full-time painter, producing his own magazine, Arcade, which is now a collector’s item.  Although living in London, the city of his birth, Martin Leman has a special affinity with Cornwall and in particular St. Ives, which forms the visual background to some of his most notable cat paintings. His design for a signed, limited edition campaign poster played a valuable role in fundraising for Tate St. Ives.Martin Leman has had more than 20 one-man shows, shown frequently at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions and appeared in many group exhibitions.
